Adoptable Pets Want To Meet You at Woofstock 2012

Adoptable Pets Want To Meet You at Woofstock 2012

If you’ve been considering adding a four (or three) legged member to your family, then you need to head down to Monument Avenue on April 28th for Richmond Animal League’s 5th annual Woofstock festival.

The festival, located on historic Monument Avenue between Allen and Lombardy streets, will feature live music from the Chris Adams Band, a beer tent stocked with craft brews, activity centers for both kids and pets – and lots and LOTS of adoptable pets.

As in past years, RAL has invited rescue groups from across the greater Richmond area to attend Woofstock with their adoptable animals. The groups will have prime festival real estate – centrally located on the grassy median near the Lee Monument.

As the Richmond Animal League’s 5th annual Woofstock approaches, pack of pet lovers have been raising funds to help the organization continue its mission of saving lives by providing hope, help, and homes to animals in need.

One such pack, headed by long-time RAL volunteer Carolyn Turner, is named in honor of a dog named Mozart. As Carolyn tells it, Mozart was not the easiest dog to love.

“To say that he was a bit neurotic would be putting it mildly, although… I suppose quirky would be a better term. He came completely unglued not only during a thunderstorm, but for a day or two afterwards. He guarded anything in his run, including empty food bowls.”

Another volunteer, Doug Bullett, gave Mozart his name. Doug refused to give up on “Mo,” even after Mo rewarded his perseverance with more than one bite.

Richmond Animal League Celebrates Earth Day all Month Long

Richmond Animal League Celebrates Earth Day all Month Long

Carbon footprint. Green communities. And adopting a shelter pet? With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, Richmond Animal League wants to help raise awareness of their “100% recycled, earth-friendly” pets, and how you can help make your pets earth-friendly, too.

There is an argument to be made that in and of themselves, pets just aren’t that great for the environment—there’s the environmental cost of producing pet food and the by-product waste it generates, the trash produced by old toys and other items, and then of course there’s the waste that comes out of the pets themselves!

The Last Kitten

The Last Kitten

Regina has been at Richmond Animal League her whole life. All 10 months of it.

Regina was born last May, just as kitten season was beginning. A tiny black kitten, she watched the hustle and bustle of daily activity at RAL, observing as other pets found their forever homes. Somehow, no one ever came for Regina.

As they grew older, Regina and her littermates graduated from the lobby of RAL to the adult cat room, where she and a dozen other teenage cats had the run of the place. Again, she watched as her playmates were adopted, and once again, she remained behind.

Regina is now the youngest cat in the adult cat room. The last kitten. Maybe it’s her black coat, or her quiet personality, but she hasn’t found the right home yet.

As animals shelters across the city prepare for the tidal wave of kittens that will arrive in a few weeks as kitten season 2012 begins, Regina continues to hope that her family will come looking for her.
