Chesterfield officer charged with embezzlement

Joshua Hill

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT)- Joshua Hill is charged with embezzlement after investigators say he stole jewelry from a woman having a medical emergency.

It happened in February, but police says they just found out about it because a family friend came asking for the missing jewelry. Four months later, police are getting some answers about what they say happened- and it means one of their own could face jail.

Joshua Hill was hired back in 2009 to serve and protect. Now, the Chesterfield officer faces felony charges. Police say Joshua Hill took jewelry from a victim- and instead of turning it in, kept it- and sold it.

Police say they did get the jewelry back after a quick investigation. It was sold to a pawn shop in the Tri-cities.

Chesterfield couple accused of stealing from Virginia Lottery

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT)- A Chesterfield couple is accused of stealing money from the Virginia Lottery. Ron and Beverly Hess face one count each of felony embezzlement of lottery funds.

According to lottery officials, the Hess' were selling lottery tickets at their Chesterfield convenience store, AJ's Market. Allegedly, they did not turn over a portion of the profit like they are required to by law.

"We're alleging that money from the sale of lottery tickets was not turned over to the Virginia Lottery as it should have been," said John Hagerty, the Virginia Lottery Spokesman.

The profits are supposed to be split between the lottery, the retailer and a portion of the profits go toward funding Virginia's public schools.

"Any accusations involving lottery tickets is taken very seriously because we raise money for K-12 public schools and we take that very seriously," said Hagerty.
