CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – We're learning more about the seriousness of an alleged hate crime at a Chesterfield County public school. Two Thomas Dale teens are now charged with a hate crime attack involving another black student and a noose.

We got some startling numbers from State Police about just how many hate crimes in Virginia are racially motivated. The victim's father in this case told me he is just trying to protect his son in all of this and any backlash he might face at school.

The 15 and 16-year-old Thomas Dale High School students charged with assault after an incident involving a noose and another black student are in even more trouble tonight. New upgraded charges accuse them of a bias-motivated assault.

The Benefits of a Home Environment for Shelter Animals

The Benefits of a Home Environment for Shelter Animals

It's safe to say that a shelter environment is not the ideal living situation for any companion animal. But there are some animals for whom a home environment is absolutely necessary.  Some dogs are so active that being confined to a kennel for long periods can cause their rambunctious behavior to spiral out of control. Anxious dogs can become neurotic, and shy ones can become even more withdrawn and timid. One of the goals for the staff and volunteers of any animal shelter is to make sure that every animal under its care has a fun, enriching daily life filled with lots of exercise, toys, and social interaction. Dogs are taken out of the shelter as much as possible, for adoption events, hikes and trips to nearby parks.

University will house some students in local hotels this fall

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State University in southern Chesterfield County has about 5600 students. Nearly half of them live in university housing. Beginning fall 2011, some students may live in local hotels, because a 400-bed residence hall is going to be demolished and then re-built. That construction project will take two years to complete.

In years past, VSU housed some students in hotels in Petersburg and Prince George. But this year, university leaders are also eyeing hotels in Chester off of Route 10. Those hotels are less than 10 miles from the campus.

"When housing stock becomes available, we move students back on to campus as it becomes available," said Thomas Reed, spokesman for Virginia State University. "If we take several hundred students and put them in off-campus housing, that community, that locality is going to really benefit."
